Aesthetic fillings
Adhesive aesthetic resin restorations are conservative dentistry procedures that restore the appearance and color of the natural tooth. They can also replace metal fillings.
Inlays and Onlays are aesthetic reconstructions that perfectly match the color of the tooth. They represent a valid alternative to metal fillings and can be divided into two categories: direct and indirect reconstructions. Direct reconstructions (direct) are resin fillings that can be done in a single appointment and are used for small cavities. Indirect reconstructions (also known as Inlays) are made of ceramic or resin and are manufactured by a dental laboratory. Usually, inlays require two appointments to be completed.
Are aesthetic fillings right for me?
Among the advantages of aesthetic fillings/reconstructions are:
- Improved aesthetic appearance of the tooth
- Preservation of a greater amount of healthy tooth as an adhesive mechanism of the resin to the tooth is used
- Excellent Biocompatibility
- Minimal risk of allergenicity of the material
- No risk of metal sensitization

The patient presented various dental aesthetic issues such as stains and irregularities. After a detailed evaluation, Dr. Frabboni recommended treatment with aesthetic fillings to improve the aesthetics of her teeth. The teeth were restored with adhesive aesthetic composite resin fillings that allowed correcting dental imperfections, making the teeth uniform, bright, aligned, and aesthetically pleasing.
HOW IS AN AESTHETIC FILLING PERFORMED?
For aesthetic fillings of anterior teeth, typically only one appointment is needed, during which a minimal part of the dental tissue may be removed to maximize the adhesion of the resin to the tooth. A surface conditioning agent is applied in the dental cavity to help prepare the tooth for the filling, improving adhesion and thus the success of the dental restoration. Subsequently, a film of adhesive liquid for the composite resin filling is applied. The resin is inserted into the dental cavity and then molded to give it the correct anatomical shape of the teeth and finally hardened with a blue light. For aesthetic inlays (indirect reconstructions), after preparing the tooth, a precision impression of the tooth is taken and sent to the laboratory that creates a replica; meanwhile, you will have a temporary protective dressing. At the second appointment, the dressing is removed, and the inlay is glued inside the tooth.
CARE OF AESTHETIC RECONSTRUCTIONS
Teeth that have received direct or indirect aesthetic restorations should receive the same meticulous care as a natural tooth. Regular brushing, use of interdental floss, and preventive professional hygiene will serve to maintain oral health and a natural appearance of the dentition.
Dr. Pier Carlo Frabboni has deep knowledge in planning and applying adhesive aesthetic restorations. We invite you to make an appointment at our office to learn more about adhesive dental aesthetic care and to understand if they are suitable for your dentition.
DURATION OF THE FILLING
Modern fillings are made with composite resins, a durable, resistant material with excellent aesthetic integration. They allow obtaining a result that aesthetically integrates with the other teeth, ensuring a healthy and functional smile in the long term.
Dental fillings are designed to withstand everyday stresses, such as common chewing. Moreover, adhesive aesthetic fillings can be used sacrificing much less tooth compared to metal fillings, which weaken the tooth and expose it over time to a risk of fracture. With proper maintenance and adequate oral hygiene, the result could last from 5 to 15 years, and even longer.
INTERVENTIONS ON OLD FILLINGS
Dr. Frabboni’s Studio also specializes in interventions involving dental fillings done in the past, which may be subject to deterioration over time due to wear, discoloration, or detachment of the materials used. Replacing old restorations with modern materials, such as composite fillings or dental veneers, offers your smile a natural, uniform, and resistant appearance.
