Dental Sensitivity: Some Clarity on How to Resolve It

Dental sensitivity is a discomfort or pain in the teeth that occurs when consuming cold or acidic foods and beverages, inhaling cold air, or brushing teeth.

The causes can be multiple and coexisting, so to resolve the problem at its source, it is necessary to consult a dentist for a correct diagnosis and targeted treatment, avoiding the use of over-the-counter products that could be ineffective and thus lead to a worsening of the condition.

Dental sensitivity is often due to:

  • Incorrect brushing that causes dental abrasion and/or gum recession, exposing the tooth root, which is more sensitive and susceptible to decay
  • Continuous friction between dental surfaces that normally should not come into contact with each other, causing trauma and thinning of the teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Internal or superficial micro-fractures in the tooth
  • An acidic diet or gastroesophageal reflux causing dental erosion

In all cases, the nerve inside the tooth is stimulated, but individual susceptibility and the ability or inability of our teeth to implement defense mechanisms mean that dental sensitivity is a variable and personal experience that can be very disabling for those who experience it.

To ensure the effectiveness of the treatment and avoid worsening of the condition, it is first necessary to act on the causes of sensitivity through:

  • Effective but gentle brushing
  • Identification and correction of continuous friction between dental surfaces
  • Treatment of any cavities
  • A diet low in acidic foods

At this point, after a correct diagnosis of the cause, it is possible to treat sensitivity by restoring the natural protective dental barrier through treatments that can be selectively performed first in the clinic and then, if necessary, continued at home with a home-care program.

Treatments by the Dentist for Dental Sensitivity

The dentist can perform several treatments for dental sensitivity, which include:

  • Restoring correct gingival and dental anatomy through minor surgical interventions on the gums
  • Rebuilding lost enamel with completely mimetic and aesthetic synthetic materials

Only in the most severe cases is it necessary to devitalize or reconstruct the tooth if it is very worn.

Furthermore, the dentist has access to professional products that form a barrier against painful stimuli with immediate and lasting relief even in cases of moderate severity, which may require more than one application session.

A synergistic action with home treatments recommended by the dentist is always preferable and effective in the long term. Home use products (toothpastes, mouthwashes, and gel or mousse formulations) must be used with the right frequency to be effective. They contain active ingredients that hinder the propagation of the painful stimulus and remineralize weakened teeth, making them stronger and more resistant to external stimuli. These same products are used to prevent and manage any transient sensitivity experienced during professional teeth whitening treatment.

Therefore, contrary to what one might think, dental sensitivity is not a condition that is easy to diagnose and may require various treatments, however, it is not necessary to live with it… With the right means, excellent results can be achieved.
